Summary

Airolo is a small local resort in Ticino (south side of the Alps), just beyond the San Gotardo tunnel exit. With only ~30 km of pistes and 8 lifts, it doesn’t compete with the major stations, but it offers something they don’t: accessible freeride in a quiet, local atmosphere, at prices well below the Swiss average.

Why ski here

  1. Freeride and off-piste — main focus, interesting terrain
  2. Local atmosphere — no mass tourism, authentic Ticinese skiing
  3. Affordable prices — significantly cheaper than Valais or Graubünden
  4. Access from Italy — Milan Malpensa 1h30 away, ideal for weekend escape

Getting there

Gotthard railway line to Airolo station. Also direct motorway access from Milan (~1h30) or Zurich (~2h15, via Gotardo tunnel).

Giora’s advice

Airolo is not a destination I’d recommend as your main ski holiday base. But it’s an excellent 1-2 day stop for those travelling between northern Italy and central Switzerland, or for freeriders looking for uncrowded terrain at a reasonable price.

  • [[andermatt]] — On the other side of Gotardo, larger ski domain
  • [[engelberg]] — Alternative in central Switzerland
