Obergurgl-Hochgurgl is the rough diamond of the Ötztal: 112 km of pistes between 1,800 and 3,080 m altitude, with 90% artificial snow coverage and a reputation as the safest snow zone in the Alps. Unlike its neighbour Sölden (massive, festive), Gurgl is intimate, exclusive and quiet — no large crowds, no slope-side discotheques, no queues.

The link between Obergurgl and Hochgurgl is via the Top Express, a panoramic cable car of 3.6 km that crosses two valleys in 9 minutes. All skiing takes place above 1,800 m, which virtually eliminates the risk of poor snow cover.

2. No overcrowding Obergurgl is a small village at the end of the valley — no through traffic. The natural visitor limit keeps the pistes empty even in peak season. Queues are practically non-existent.

3. Top Express: two valleys in 9 minutes The panoramic cable car connecting Obergurgl and Hochgurgl crosses a spectacular Alpine valley. Two complementary ski areas accessible without descending to the village.

Obergurgl-Hochgurgl is my recommendation for high-end couples and families who want guaranteed snow, zero overcrowding and Alpine tranquility. It is the anti-Ischgl, the anti-St. Anton. Pure skiing in a contemplative state.

Ideal profile: Couples, families with budget, skiers who value quality over quantity.

Can be combined with: A day in Sölden (30 minutes down valley) to vary and experience the glaciers.
