Summary

Sölden is pure Austrian high mountain skiing: 146 km of pistes, two glaciers (Rettenbach and Tiefenbach), three peaks above 3,000 m accessible by lift (BIG3: Gaislachkogl, Tiefenbachkogl, Schwarze Schneid) and a vertical drop of almost 2,000 m. It is the resort that opens the FIS Alpine Ski World Cup every October on the Rettenbach glacier.

The village of Sölden (1,350 m) in the Ötztal valley combines modern infrastructure with lively après-ski. Since 2015, the 007 ELEMENTS installation at the summit of Gaislachkogl (3,048 m) — the James Bond Spectre filming location — adds a unique cinematic appeal.

Why ski here

1. Two glaciers, three 3,000m peaks Sölden is Austria’s only resort with three “three-thousanders” accessible by lift. Glacier skiing guaranteed from October, with genuine alpine high-mountain conditions.

2. 2,000 m vertical drop From Schwarze Schneid (3,340 m) to the village (1,350 m): one of the largest continuous ski descents in the Alps.

3. World Cup + James Bond Rettenbach glacier hosts the FIS Alpine Ski World Cup opener every October. Gaislachkogl features the 007 ELEMENTS installation (Spectre) — a cinematic experience at 3,048 m.

4. State-of-the-art lifts 31 lifts, few but ultramodern — high-capacity cable cars that move skiers with exceptional efficiency. No long queues for a domain of this size.

Giora’s note

I haven’t skied here myself. This guide is based on verified sources.

Sölden is for skiers who want real high mountain skiing (glacier + 3,000m) with modern infrastructure and nightlife. It’s not Austria’s largest domain (146 km), but the vertical and glacier experience make up for it.

Essential:

  • Reach all three BIG3 peaks in a single day
  • Visit 007 ELEMENTS on Gaislachkogl
  • Ski Rettenbach glacier early in the morning

Combine with: [[obergurgl]] (30 min up the valley, quieter and more exclusive).

  • [[obergurgl]] — Up the valley, more exclusive
  • [[ischgl]] — Another large Tyrolean resort (more km, lower altitude)
  • [[stubaier-gletscher]] — Neighbouring glacier
  • [[hintertux]] — Another Tyrolean glacier
