Tignes is for those seeking snow + altitude + 300 km connection (Espace Killy), without needing a “pretty village”. It is French pragmatism: function > form.

It is not a resort: these are two valleys connected, 300 km interconnected pistes, infinite ski area experience.

Tignes

The connection: 40 minutes by cable car

Breakfast in Tignes → lunch in Val d’Isère → coffee in Tignes again. Espace Killy pass = total freedom of movement.

Sassière Glacier (3,456m)

The summit of Espace Killy. Access via cable car from Tignes Val Claret. Pure glacier skiing, white ice, smooth carving. Views of Chamonix (Mont-Blanc) and Gran Paradiso (Italy).

Col de l’Iseran (3,000m)

Connection point Tignes-Val d’Isère. Epic red descent piste.

Bellevarde (3,002m)

Val d’Isère. Famous Olympic piste from Championships (1992). Technical black piste, 1,000m descent from summit.

Tignes Val Claret (2,100m, 2,400m options)

Different altitudes = flexibility. Safe base snow at VAL CLARET (higher).

Why ski here

1. Guaranteed snow 6 months. Base 2,100m + glacier = November to May. Earliest season start of any French resort.

2. 300 km Espace Killy. Infinite variety. Every day different. It is not repetition. It is exploration.

3. Ski-in/Ski-out infrastructure. Tignes is an “integrated resort” = pistes from hotel. Ski locker, no transfers.

4. Accessible glacier. It is not Chamonix (chaotic freeride). It is marked glacier, smooth carving, systematic French safety.

5. Easy access from Spain. Flight to Chambéry, 1.5h transfer. Closer than Ischgl or Courmayeur.

The snow

Excellent. Base altitude + glacier = redundancy. January-March: heart of season, consistent snow. November-December: early start. April-May: spring but glacier still skiable.

Powder: possible at altitude (Sassière, Bellevarde) after medium snowfall. Medium frequency (not daily powder like Lech, but regular).

Best period: January-February for pure snow. November-December for early season (rare in the Alps). April-May for spring (strong sun, softens quickly).

Accommodation

Tignes: More “collective” atmosphere than Courchevel. Bars with DJs, indoor pool, water centre. It is “coordinated fun”, not “silent elegance”.

Gastronomy: Fondues, raclettes, Tarte Savoyarde (potatoes + cream + cabbage). Mountain cooking, not gastronomic. Savoie white wine.

How to get there

From Spain: Flight to Chambéry → transfer to Tignes is the standard route. 1.5h + comfortable transfer.

Tignes works well if:

• You want guaranteed snow (2,100m base + glacier)
• You need “300 km connected” (Espace Killy)
• You travel with family (robust infrastructure)
• You can accept 1970s architecture (it is not a “pretty village”)

Avoid if:

• You hate modern urban design (Tignes IS brutalist 1970s)
• You are looking for “picturesque mountain village” (it is industrial)
• Your budget is very limited

Optimal time: January-February for pure snow. November for early season start (rare).

Essential: Make the Espace Killy loop: Tignes AM → Val d’Isère lunch → Tignes PM. It is the infinite ski area experience.

Avoid: July-September (skiing closed, massive glacier tourism).
