Appenzell Alps (Säntis region) is a family-oriented alpine ski resort in the eastern Swiss Alps, canton St. Gallen. Characterised by moderate altitude (1,100m base, 2,502m Säntis summit), wide pistes for intermediates, and a strong family focus.

Less internationally known than Verbier or Zermatt, but very popular with local Swiss for weekend skiing and families. Modern infrastructure, quiet local atmosphere. Ideal for intermediate skiers and children.

No snowpark or night skiing — pure, traditional skiing.

Intermediate carving alpine — Well-groomed Swiss pistes, medium to wide widths. Ideal for intermediate to advanced progression.

Families — Base area with abundant green-blue pistes. Kid-friendly infrastructure (ski schools, children’s parks).

Winter hiking — Many prepared trails for snowshoe walking. More leisurely than technical skiing.

Location and access

Appenzell Alps occupies the Säntis region — a plateau in the eastern Swiss Alps. Canton St. Gallen (northeast Switzerland).

Base villages:

Train access (recommended)

• SBB from Zurich to Urnäsch or Stein (approximately 1h 45min)
• From St. Gallen to Urnäsch (45-60 min)
• Local connections by funicular or cable car to main lift

• From Zurich: 120 km, ~1.5h via Swiss motorways (Appenzell direction)
• From St. Gallen: 40 km, ~45 min

Pistes and zones

Säntis base zone

Main access by cable car from Urnäsch to Säntis summit (2,502m). Varied descents (green-red) towards base.

Northern sector (Brülisau)

Wide intermediate pistes, ideal for families. Moderate vertical.

Southern sector (Stein)

Alternative access via cable cars. Varied red pistes.

Winter hiking

Numerous prepared snowshoe trails. Alternative to skiing.

Après-ski and atmosphere

Appenzell has a quiet, traditional Swiss alpine atmosphere. Small bars and restaurants serving local food (fondue, raclette, Appenzell specialities: cheeses, cider). No active nightlife (compared to Verbier or Zermatt).

Very local population, family-oriented atmosphere. Respect for nature and order.
