Summary

Chamonix is not a conventional ski resort. It is the world capital of freeride, the cradle of mountaineering and a mountain village with a personality that no mega-resort can replicate. There is no interconnected domain with valley-to-valley gates: there are five independent ski areas scattered across the valley, each with its own character, and then there is the Vallée Blanche — 20 kilometres of glacier descent from the summit of Aiguille du Midi at 3,842 metres.

It is a destination for skiers seeking real mountains, not theme parks on snow. It requires intermediate-advanced level at minimum to make the most of the terrain. There are no luxury childcare facilities or foam slopes for absolute beginners.

Technical data

Type of skiing and level

Pure alpine: Chamonix is geared towards freeride and mountaineering, not piste carving. The reds and blacks have sustained technical character. Average gradients of 25-35° in freeride.

Freeride: This is the heart of Chamonix. Off-piste itineraries from Grands Montets, Brévent and Aiguille du Midi offer descents of 1,000-1,800m of vertical drop with frequent powder snow.

Ski touring and ski mountaineering: Direct starting points for ski touring itineraries. The Vallée Blanche is Europe’s most famous glacier ski tour.

Recommended level:

• Advanced intermediate as a minimum (50+ freeride descents)
• For Vallée Blanche: intermediate-high + glacier certification + guide

Pistes and highlighted areas

Grands Montets (3,275m)

The heart of freeride. Access by cable car to 3,275m. Vertical descent itineraries, seracs, frequent powder snow. Classics: Couloir du Tour Ronde, Pas de Chèvre, Col du Brévent. Advanced only.

Vallée Blanche (3,842m → 1,035m)

20 km glacier descent from Aiguille du Midi. Crevasses, seracs, constant Mont Blanc panoramas. Certified guide mandatory. Best season: February-April. Takes 4-5 hours. It is a must in a skier’s lifetime.

Brévent (2,525m) and Flégère-Index (2,595m)

Two separate sectors that the domain counts together. Brévent rises to 2,525 m, Flégère to 2,595 m via the Index lift. Red pistes with character and direct views of Mont Blanc. Good for advanced intermediates. Telecabins with direct access from the village (Brévent) and from Les Praz (Flégère).

Les Houches (1,900m)

The most family-friendly zone, among trees, ideal for bad weather. But still has technical reds. Access from Chamonix or Saint-Gervais.

Le Tour-Balme (2,270m)

Quiet, without crowds. Good snow, terrain accessible for intermediates. View of Mont Blanc from another angle.

Lift pass and tickets

The star lift pass is MONT BLANC Unlimited (in summer, Mont Blanc MultiPass). It gives access to all Chamonix areas except the summit of Grands Montets, plus Les Houches-Saint-Gervais, all of Evasion Mont Blanc (Megève, Les Contamines, Cordon, Saint-Nicolas, Le Jaillet, Combloux, La Giettaz), the Italian Skyway Monte Bianco and excursion sites (Aiguille du Midi 1st + 2nd section, Mer de Glace, Tramway du Mont-Blanc).

If you only want one sector (winter 2025-26, pedestrian/return fares verified against official guide):

Après-ski and restaurants

Bars: Chambre Neuf (after skiing), Jekyll & Hyde (young, brewery), MBC Micro Brasserie de Chamonix (local atmosphere).

Restaurants: From traditional fondues (Le Prieuré) to fine dining. Le Hameau Albert 1er (⭐ Michelin).

Atmosphere: Cosmopolitan, authentic alpine. Skiers, mountaineers and backpackers mingle. Without the shrillness of mega-resorts like Val Thorens.

What changes for 2025/26

Three developments verified in the official guide Compagnie du Mont-Blanc winter 2025-26:

• Espace Ascension at the summit of Aiguille du Midi: new room with panoramic film on the history of mountaineering, opening planned March 2026. Aiguille du Midi also celebrates 70 years (1955-2025).
• Smoke-free decree from 27 June 2025: pistes, lifts and their queues are smoke-free areas throughout the domain.
• Tramway du Mont-Blanc (France’s highest rack railway) operates from 13 Dec 2025 to 6 Apr 2026; winter terminus Bellevue (1,794 m).

How to get there

From Spain: Flight to Geneva (usual from Madrid/Barcelona), transfer 1h15 to village.

Accommodation

Location: Accommodation is in the village (at 1,035m). Access to pistes by cable car, free bus or car. No integrated resort like Les 3 Vallées.

Skiing with children and families

Not the best option for families with small children. There are no integrated childcare facilities, no foam slopes, no large ski schools.

It is viable for intermediate children (8+ years, 50+ descents) seeking adventure. Les Houches has quieter terrain among trees.

Best time to go

Tip: January-February is the perfect window. February is peak Vallée Blanche season.

How much does a week of skiing in Chamonix cost and what is included?

Quick answer: Chamonix Mont-Blanc Unlimited pass 47-74€/day (includes 13 valley resorts). 3★ hotel from 95€/night, 4★ from 160€. One week for 2 people, central 3★ hotel + 6-day pass + transfer from Geneva: 1,700-2,100€. Chamonix has a trap: it looks like one resort but is actually six separate domains (Brévent-Flégère, Grands Montets, Les Houches, Domaine de Balme, Vallorcine, Aiguille du Midi). Moving between them consumes time and a first trip without guidance gets lost between telecabins and buses. If you come for a week, my advice is to stay in the centre (Mont-Blanc or Faubourg des Pèlerins), one day Grands Montets, another Brévent at dawn for the Mont Blanc postcard, another Les Houches with hot chocolate at the Tremplin, and book Vallée Blanche for the most stable day in the weather forecast. That is worth the trip.

Is Vallée Blanche safe and does Viajes Scibasku organise it?

Quick answer: yes, we do. We work with certified local UIAGM guides. Vallée Blanche is a glacier itinerary (not a piste) and requires intermediate-high skiing level and mandatory guide. Booking the guide a month in advance is recommended during high season. Typical guide fee: 380-450€ for a group of up to 4 skiers.

I have skied the Vallée Blanche in many conditions and I will be straight with you: it is not just any black run, it is high alpine with visible and hidden crevasses, hard névé in the afternoon, and a first descent down the Aiguille du Midi ridge that without a guide is Russian roulette. The level I ask of you to sign up: defend French reds confidently, endurance for 22-25 km on uneven gradient, and no issues with exposure. If you have that, it is one of the best days of skiing that exist in the Alps. If not, I recommend something else before you book — there are spectacular alternatives in Chamonix without the glacier risk.

Scibasku advice

Chamonix is for the skier who wants real mountains — not kilometres of interconnected pistes, but terrain with character, serious off-piste and an experience that goes beyond skiing.

Must-do:

• The Vallée Blanche (if conditions permit). Book guide in advance in July/August for winter season.
• Hire certified mountain guide for any off-piste activity. It is not optional.

What you will NOT find:

• XXL interconnected domain (for that: Les 3 Vallées, Espace Killy)
• Resort with integrated apartments and childcare
• Pistes for absolute beginners

Best strategy:

• 5-7 nights
• 3-4 days skiing, 1-2 days guided (Vallée Blanche, ski touring)
• Complete alpine climate (not a sterile luxury resort)
