Courmayeur is the Italian side of Mont Blanc and one of Italy’s most elegant ski destinations. With 43 km of prepared pistes between 1,205m and 2,755m (plus ~57 km of off-piste itineraries), the domain divides into two sectors: Chécrouit (sunny, Mont Blanc views) and Val Vény (wilder, north-facing, better snow).

More than piste kilometres, Courmayeur stands out for its legendary freeride — the Vallée Blanche via Skyway Monte Bianco/Punta Helbronner, the Arp channels — and for a village with refined social and gastronomic life that rivals Cortina.

Why ski here

1. Mont Blanc as backdrop Ski with western Europe’s highest mountain (4,808m) dominating the horizon. From Chécrouit, the views are postcard-perfect.

2. Legendary freeride: Italian Vallée Blanche Via Skyway Monte Bianco (Punta Helbronner, 3,466m), access to the Vallée Blanche and high-altitude glacier descents. With a guide, a life-changing experience.

3. A village with character Pedestrian Via Roma with boutiques, gourmet restaurants and characterful bars. The Alpine dolce vita of Valle d’Aosta: elegant without being snobbish.

4. Val Vény: excellent snow North-facing sector with cold orientation. Powder snow frequent and pistes through forest. Courmayeur’s “secret side”.

Courmayeur is my recommendation for couples and skiers seeking the most refined Italian Alpine experience: technical skiing + freeride + village with character + gastronomy. It’s not for piste-hunting (43 km prepared), but for quality of experience. The Skyway and Vallée Blanche with a guide justify the trip alone.
