Kreischberg is a family resort with a snowboard soul: 42 km of pistes in the Murau Valley, deep in Styria, away from the crowds that overwhelm Tyrol or Salzburg. Small on paper, with a vertical drop that is anything but: 1,250 m between the 868 m valley floor and the 2,118 m summit.

Its international calling card is freestyle: it has hosted snowboard and freestyle world championships. That such a quiet valley has organised world championships says much about the quality of its facilities for board and park.

The piste distribution is that of a balanced resort: 17.5 km of blue runs, 16 km of red runs and 9 km of black runs. There is genuine progression for the whole family without boring experienced skiers.

Why ski here

1. Genuinely quiet atmosphere. The Murau Valley is off the mass tourism circuit. You ski here without kilometre-long queues or crowded pistes.
2. World championship pedigree in snowboard and freestyle. If your group has boarders or park enthusiasts, this resort has hosted world championships.
3. Serious vertical for its size. 1,250 m of vertical drop means long descents with real mileage — not the typical small, flat domain.
4. Balanced distribution. Nearly half the kilometrage in blue runs: kids and beginners have plenty of terrain, and the black runs (9 km) provide a challenge for those who want it.

It doesn’t work well if:

• You need big mileage — with 42 km, a voracious skier will cover it in a few days
• You’re after party après-ski: the Murau Valley is about rest, not Ischgl

How we’d sell it: family week where adults ski properly (1,250 m vertical) and the kids progress without stress. The lift pass price (€68 per day, 2025/26) sits below the fashionable big names.
