Summary

Serre Chevalier is the largest ski area in southern France: 250 km of pistes connected across a single valley (Vallée de la Guisane), with 82 pistes and around 61 lifts distributed across 4 sectors — Briançon, Chantemerle, Villeneuve and Le Monêtier-les-Bains.

Unlike the mega-domains of the north (Les 3 Vallées, Paradiski), Serre Chevalier is an isolated domain with no connection to others, which means less crowding, more distinctive character and a genuinely Alpine atmosphere. 80% of the domain sits above 2,000 m, with abundant forest terrain at intermediate altitudes — ideal for poor visibility days.

Briançon, France’s highest city (1,326 m), is the urban hub: Vauban fortress (UNESCO Heritage), market, real village life.

Why ski here

1. 250 km without crowds The same mileage as Alpe d’Huez but without belonging to massive international circuits. Minimal queues, empty pistes during the week.

2. France’s best forest skiing Intermediate altitudes (1,500-2,200 m) are covered in dense forest. When visibility is zero at northern resorts, Serre Chevalier delivers tree skiing with perfect reference points.

3. Briançon: a real city, not a resort 17th-century Vauban fortress, UNESCO Heritage. Market, restaurants, mountain shops. Village life that doesn’t exist at resorts like Val Thorens or Les Menuires.

4. Real sustainability Over 30% of the domain’s electricity is produced on-site. Serious sustainability commitment — not greenwashing.

5. Italian border 45 minutes from the Italian border (Col de l’Echelle / Fréjus). Can combine with Via Lattea or Bardonecchia.

Piste de Cugnette

Legendary red: 1,500 m continuous vertical, constant hairpins, varied terrain. One of France’s longest and most enjoyable reds.

Pic de Serre Chevalier (2,800m)

The domain’s summit. Views over the Écrins. Varied descents — technical red or scenic blue.

Le Monêtier - Thermal zone

Ski in the morning, thermal baths in the afternoon. Les Grands Bains du Monêtier is one of the Alps’ finest thermal spas.

Grand Serre (forest zone)

Full protection in bad weather. Green and blue pistes winding through fir trees. Welcoming mountain huts.

Giora’s advice

I haven’t personally skied here. This sheet is based on verified sources.

Serre Chevalier is Giora’s recommendation for families and intermediates seeking authentic skiing without crowds: 250 km, dense forest, real town (Briançon), thermal spas in Le Monêtier, and prices 20-30% lower than the northern Alps.

Must-do:

  • Ski the entire Piste de Cugnette (red, 1,500m vertical)
  • Stroll Briançon’s old town (Vauban, UNESCO)
  • Afternoon at Les Grands Bains du Monêtier thermal spa

Strategy: 6-7 nights. Base in Le Monêtier (thermal spa + charm) or Chantemerle (central access). 4-5 days skiing, 1-2 alternative days.

  • [[alpe-dhuez]] — Another major southern domain, sunnier
  • [[les-deux-alpes]] — Glacier + extreme vertical
  • [[les-3-vallees]] — Mega-domain of the north (another league in size)
  • [[via-lattea]] — Across the Italian border
