Austria · Tyrol (Zillertal) · 1,500m - 3,250m · 64 km · Glacier open year-round

Summary

Hintertux is Austria’s only glacier open all 365 days of the year. Deep in the Zillertal, where the road ends, the glacier offers 64 km of pistes and 20 lifts up to 3,250m. It’s where national ski teams train in summer and where freeriders find powder snow when the rest of Austria is hiking season.

It forms part of the Zillertal Superskipass (546 km), but its character is unmistakably glacier: altitude, wind, lunar landscape, eternal snow.

Why ski here

  1. 365 days of skiing — Austria’s only glacier that never closes
  2. 3,250m — the highest skiable altitude in Zillertal
  3. Zillertal Superskipass — combined access with Mayrhofen, Zillertal Arena and more (546 km)
  4. Glacier freeride — extreme terrain with advanced itineraries
  5. Elite training — where national teams prepare for season

Getting there

Train to Jenbach → Zillertalbahn to Mayrhofen → bus to Hintertux (~30 min). By car from Innsbruck ~1h15.

Scibasku’s tip

Hintertux is a niche destination: perfect for summer skiers (June–September), to combine with [[mayrhofen]] in winter, or for freeriders seeking high-altitude snow. Not a family destination or for a full week on its own — 2-3 days on the glacier combined with Zillertal valley is the ideal combo.

  • [[mayrhofen]] — Valley base, après-ski and complementary pistes
  • [[stubaier-gletscher]] — Austria’s largest glacier, ~45 min from Innsbruck
  • [[soelden]] — Another Tyrolean glacier with more facilities
