It’s best to leave Zermatt no later than 10:30 to have time for a relaxed lunch in Cervinia or Valtournenche and start the return before 14:30–15:00 (times vary by month and weather; the last lift back to Switzerland is the bottleneck). If strong wind closes Klein Matterhorn, it’s worth checking the forecast the night before. For those short on time, staying one night in Cervinia and returning the next day is a reasonable alternative.
