Summary

Les Arcs is France’s largest family resort — part of Paradiski (425 km connected with La Plagne). Three cascading villages (Les Arcs 1,200m, 1,600m, 2,000m) let you choose altitude by preference — low base for families, mid-altitude for snow security, summit for glacier-like experience (Pic de la Mar, 3,226m).

Skiing is intermediate-family pure — wide pistes, well-groomed, excellent for beginner-intermediate skiers. Not “epic mountain”, it’s “family Alps school”.

Resort built 1960s-70s with “modern-alpine urban planning” philosophy — functional villages (architecturally ugly but efficient). Decision: you love “alpine modernity” or you hate it.

Les Arcs

Arc 1,200 — Base, lowest access, milder climate, snow guarantee less reliable but easy logistics. Arc 1,600 — Mid-zone, altitude-accessibility compromise. Arc 2,000 — Summit, guaranteed snow, views.

La Plagne (another resort)

Accessible via cable cars from Les Arcs summit. Identical domain ~200 km.

Connection: Vanoise Express

Reversible bi-cabin cable car (pendulum) connects Les Arcs 2,000 with La Plagne 2,000 in 6 minutes. Resort icon (was “technical revolution” 1989).

Pistes and highlighted areas

Pic de la Mar (3,226m)

Paradiski’s summit. Access by cable car from Les Arcs 2,000. Long red descent to base. Mont-Blanc views and Alpine massif. North-facing area = consistent snow.

Chamonix (2,700m, zone not the town)

Legendary black piste. Technical descent, moguls, narrow sections. For advanced skiers.

Family zones (Arc 1,200, Arc 1,600)

Wide blue pistes, gentle terrain, family snowpark, ski schools. The “learn to ski” zone.

Vallée de l’Arly (low)

Long descent from Arc 1,600 towards Arc 1,200. Blue piste, gentle gradient, for comfortable intermediates.

Why ski here

1. Paradiski is 425 km. France’s second-largest connected domain. Immense variety. Different each day.

2. Best option for beginner families. Wide pistes, protected zones, educational snowparks, excellent ski schools.

3. Altitude flexibility. Choose Arc 1,200 if travelling with small children (logistics), Arc 1,600 for reliable snow, Arc 2,000 for Alpine experience.

4. Vanoise Express is iconic. Reversible panoramic cable car connects in 6 min. Tourist attraction in itself — passes over lake — spectacular.

5. Easy access from Spain. Chambéry flight, 1.5h transfer. More direct than Chamonix or Tignes.

The snow

Variable by altitude:

• Arc 1,200: Temperamental, low base, poor snow risk in dry years
• Arc 1,600: Intermediate, reliable January-March
• Arc 2,000: Snow guarantee, north-facing, Pic de la Mar consistent

Rule: if in doubt, go higher. System allows flexibility.

Best season: January-March for guaranteed base snow at all altitudes.

Les Arcs: Moderate pace, family-oriented. Heated pools, cinemas, non-ski activities. It’s a “resort” not a “mountain town”.

Gastronomy: Fondues, raclettes, Tartiflette (potatoes + cheese + smoked ham). Country cooking. Savoie white wine.

From Spain: Flight to Chambéry → Les Arcs transfer optimal route. 1.5h logistics.

• You’re after “425 km connected” (Paradiski)
• You accept 1970s architecture (functional, not pretty)
• You need altitude flexibility (Arc 1,200/1,600/2,000)

Avoid if:

• You’re after “picturesque mountain village” (Les Arcs is modern resort)
• You require extreme freeride (Les Arcs is family carving)
• Budget is very tight

Optimal window: January-February for guaranteed snow at all altitudes.

Must-do: Take Vanoise Express cable car — unique technical experience (reversible cable, lake views).

Extra activity: If small children, Les Arcs ski schools are excellent (professional French system).
