Summary

Morzine-Avoriaz is the western gateway to Portes du Soleil, Europe’s most iconic ski circuit: 650 km connected across 12 resorts in France, Switzerland and Italy. Unlike the high-altitude mega-resorts (Les 3 Vallées, Val Thorens), Morzine-Avoriaz offers forest, a living village, vibrant freeride and slopestyle culture — and easy access to all of Portes du Soleil from the same place.

Base village at 1,000m (direct cable car access), Avoriaz resort at 1,800m (futuristic 1970s resort-hotel architecture), Morzine is the choice for families and intermediates who want volume without sacrificing village life or genuine mountain feel.

Skiing type and level

Varied alpine: Densely forested, open-to-closed transitions. Long, fun blues. Technical but accessible reds. Blacks in Avoriaz zone.

Slopestyle and freestyle: Avoriaz is France’s slopestyle capital. Boardercross, halfpipe, natural slopestyle using terrain. Official infrastructure for competitions.

Families: Excellent. Forest shelter in bad weather. Living villages (not pure resort). Professional ski schools. Urban entertainment (shops, cafés, cultural life).

Accessible ski touring: Terrain allows marked ski touring itineraries without technical equipment.

Recommended level:

  • Beginner for green/blue forest runs
  • Intermediate for reds and domain exploration
  • Advanced for blacks and freestyle

Giora’s advice

I haven’t skied here personally. This guide is based on verified sources.

Morzine-Avoriaz is the resort for skiers who prioritise exploration + living village + easy access over guaranteed altitude. It’s the “human” option on Portes du Soleil.

Must-do:

  • Full or partial Portes du Soleil circuit (minimum to Châtel and Les Gets)
  • A day at Avoriaz Snowpark if you’re into freestyle or slopestyle
  • Forest exploration in Morzine on a grey day

Differences:

  • Vs. Avoriaz alone: access to living village, more life
  • Vs. Val Thorens: less altitude, more village, more forest
  • Vs. Chamonix: no glacier freeride, but easy Portes du Soleil access

Strategy:

  • 5-7 nights
  • 3-4 days Portes du Soleil exploration
  • 1-2 days pure Morzine-Avoriaz (park, night skiing)
  • 1 rest day (village or activities)
  • [[avoriaz]] — Avoriaz resort specifically (separate)
  • [[chamonix-mont-blanc]] — Alternative freeride, another northern access
  • [[portes-du-soleil-overview]] — Complete Portes du Soleil circuit
  • [[les-gets]] — Another Portes du Soleil resort, more casual
