Ideal for Flexible group that values independence and honest value over piled-on luxury.
Avoid if If you're expecting a private hot tub and cinema room, Portillo isn't that. For that, there are the chalets up the row.

Portillo is one of the more reasonably priced serviced apartments in Méribel. Up to ten beds, apartment-style layout (not a chalet with three floors and stairs), entire kitchen of your own.

I’m sometimes asked: “Which chalet do you recommend for a group that skis hard and comes back exhausted?” I usually say Portillo. It has no spa. It has no cinema. It has good cooking facilities, good beds, and a sensible layout so nobody fights over the bathroom.

Do you know that kind of place where nothing is spectacular but everything works? Portillo is that.

Don’t go if you were expecting a private hot tub and massage room. For that, there are the chalets up the row, with their prices up the row as well.

Portillo is the sensible choice. Some weeks, the smartest in the catalogue.

Why Méribel

600 km of piste. Three villages. A resort that does not show off.

Méribel is the geographical centre of Les Trois Vallées. In cold figures, that is 600 km of connected piste. In practice, it is breakfast in Méribel, lunch in Val Thorens, and runs down through Courchevel without touching the car.

It is not Chamonix. It does not require you to be worthy before you are happy. Méribel has trees and small villages and pistes that still ski well when it is blowing higher up. It works for the group of six friends who ski hard. It works for the grandparents who take three blue runs and earn their fondue.

Do not go if you are after a glacier above 3,000 m, or if the idea of seeing wooden chalets on every corner bores you. Zermatt or Val d’Isère are there for that.

Méribel is like a good conversation: it starts slowly and you do not want it to end.

Méribel runs in weeks, Saturday to Saturday, and the good chalets go fast. If you have dates and a group, send me the details here.
