Trois Ours is what happens when twelve friends decide not to separate for a week.

Outdoor hot tub, hammam, sauna, gym, massage room and cinema. Full spa inside the chalet. Ski-in / ski-out: you put your skis on three minutes’ walk away. We cover the rest: chef, host, breakfast before your first run, tea at four, four-course dinner at eight.

Don’t go if you prefer to cook at two in the morning. For that freedom there’s serviced mode. Don’t go if there are four of you. The chalet performs when it’s full, and so does the price per person.

Méribel has 600 km of pistes. Trois Ours has three bears on the shield. You decide how many runs you want before the fondue.

Méribel is the geographical centre of Les Trois Vallées. In cold figures, that is 600 km of connected piste. In practice, it is breakfast in Méribel, lunch in Val Thorens, and runs down through Courchevel without touching the car.

It is not Chamonix. It does not require you to be worthy before you are happy. Méribel has trees and small villages and pistes that still ski well when it is blowing higher up. It works for the group of six friends who ski hard. It works for the grandparents who take three blue runs and earn their fondue.

Do not go if you are after a glacier above 3,000 m, or if the idea of seeing wooden chalets on every corner bores you. Zermatt or Val d’Isère are there for that.

Méribel is like a good conversation: it starts slowly and you do not want it to end.
