Alpe d’Huez has always been called “L’île au soleil” — the island of the sun. It’s not local marketing: the geography of the Grandes Rousses massif faces it south with very little mountain shadow to the north, and that gives it more hours of direct sunlight per day than almost any resort at its altitude. For anyone travelling with young children or people who find dry cold at 2,000 m difficult, that alone is reason enough.

The Club Med is Exclusive Collection with a spa by Payot, three room categories (Superior with 7 options, Deluxe with 6, Suite with 1), and direct access to the domain: 250 km of pistes between Alpe d’Huez and Les Sarennes. This is where the resort’s other major draw appears — the Sarenne piste, 16 km of continuous descent from Pic Blanc (3,330 m) down to the village. It’s the longest ski piste in the Alps and one of those experiences people talk about with friends for years afterwards.

The honest “but”: the domain has a low altitude in some areas, and snow from mid-April onwards depends on the year. If you’re planning a late visit, it’s worth knowing that the mid-altitude zones hold better; the high ones are always fine.

Don’t go if what you’re after is dense nightlife (Alpe d’Huez has a scene but it’s not Val Thorens) or high minimum altitude for a long December/April season. For guaranteed snow in extreme conditions, Tignes or Val Thorens; for intense après-ski, Val Thorens.

Alpe d’Huez is for someone who says “I want long pistes, sunshine, and a leisurely lunch run back to the mountain hut”.
