Val Thorens Sensations is the Club Med “top-of-the-range ski” resort in the catalogue. It sits at 2,300 m — Europe’s highest ski resort — and is connected to Les 3 Vallées, the world’s largest ski domain: 600 km of pistes on a single lift pass. Here, things operate on a different scale.

What this means in practice: if you book the first week of December, you’ll ski well. If you book the last week of April, you’ll ski well. If you book the first week of May… you will too, depending on the year, but the domain’s minimum altitude (Méribel, 1,450 m) already starts to come into play. Altitude is the currency here — and everything the resort does aligns with it: long descents from 3,000 m down to the village, climbing as an activity, dense après-ski (Folie Douce is 5 minutes away), three room categories (Superior, Deluxe, Suite with 4 options each).

The Sothys-branded spa, restaurants with a “haute cuisine at altitude” line and the fact that the entire village street is pedestrianised and partying until a certain hour — it all fits together. I’ll be straight with you: Val Thorens is not for everyone. It’s loud, high, vertical. Some people love it. Some people ask to move after two days.

How I guide: if you tell me “I want the 3 Vallées, I want to ski hard, I want après-ski” → this is it. If you say “I want to relax and read a book by the fireplace” → try another Club Med.

Don’t come if altitude makes you dizzy, you prefer a traditional chalet village, or you’re travelling with young children who fall asleep at nine. For low altitude in Savoy, Valmorel; for tradition, La Rosière.

Val Thorens is for skiers who ski — everyone else, better off at another Club Med.

Why Club Med

Lift pass, lessons, meals and kids’ club on a single invoice.

Club Med works very well for one particular kind of traveller: families who do not want to think about anything for a week, couples who would rather have the table already set than go hunting for a bistro, groups who like dinner to mix with other tables. If you recognise yourself there, this is for you.

All-inclusive in the Alps has little to do with all-inclusive in the Caribbean. Here the lift pass, the ESF lessons, full board with wine on the table and the kids’ club all live inside the same price. There are no surprises on the way out. When you add up on paper what each of those costs separately at any resort in the Alps, the Club Med model usually lands on the side of making sense.

If it does not suit you, I will say so: if what you want is the cabin lost in the middle of the woods, or long dinners in the village at your own pace, or you are not taking anyone to a kids’ club — there are other products on this same site for that (chalets in Méribel, and booking freely in any of the resorts we list).

What I add is the human filter: helping you decide which resort fits how you travel — before you book, not after.
