Valmorel is the wooden chalet in the Club Med Alpes catalogue — and I say that with affection. The resort was built in the 1970s under the rule that no building could break the traditional Savoyard silhouette, so there are no ugly towers like Tignes or contemporary bunkers like Les Arcs Panorama. There is stone, dark wood, carved balconies, a narrow pedestrian street, a small restaurant with real apple tart.
The resort hotel sits at 1,400 m, connected to the Le Grand Domaine domain: 165 km of pistes between Valmorel and Saint-François Longchamp. It is not a massive domain — it is a friendly domain, with plenty of blues, reds that you can ski in a group, and forest at mid-altitude. It suits families with children in ESF classes perfectly, couples who ski at ease, and groups where there are different levels.
Like Grand Massif, Valmorel offers two products: the resort hotel and the Chalets de Beaufortain (private apartments with Club Med service). The two signatures — cuisine emphasising Savoyard produce and the Sothys-branded spa — are what stay in your memory most. Gastronomy matters here: Beaufort cheese, Savoyard wines, local tarts.
Do not go if what you are after is altitude (Valmorel is at village level), kilometres (165 is modest for intensive skiing) or nightlife. For volume, Les Arcs Panorama; for altitude, Tignes; for partying, Val Thorens.
Valmorel is where I send families who say “we want relaxed skiing, good food and architecture that does not look like an industrial estate”.

Skier wanting 400 km and maximum altitude. Here it is 165 km comfortably — for volume, Val Thorens or Les Arcs Panorama.
